Three things are necessary to have self cleaning gutters: 1. A leaf guard of a specific nature must be installed on the gutter. 2. The quantity and size of the debris entering the gutter must be limited by the gutter guard. 3. A constant mixing must be created by the water entering the gutter from the gutter guards. Self cleaning gutters seem like an impossible dream with all this said. Anyone who has a home surrounded by trees who has to clean his gutters three or four times in the fall and a couple times in the spring knows that a tremendous amount of debris falls upon the roof and collects in the gutter.
Copper and stainless steel gutters run the highest in terms of costs. These high-end materials are strong and will not rust or rot. They can cost up to $20 per linear foot. A faux-copper gutter made of aluminum called "Musket Brown" sells for $9 per linear foot. Aluminum gutters are by far the most popular because they do not rust are lightweight and cost anywhere from $4-$8 per linear foot. However these gutters are more easily damaged by ladders and branches which may cost more money in repairs over several years.
Therefore as much as cleaning the inside of your gutters matters exteriors of your gutters must also be paid heed to. Dirty dingy and stained gutters are bound to drop the appeal of your house. Many times the water dripping of the edges of your gutters due to overflow and leaves stains and marks which are commonly called the Tiger stripes. Also the moisture on the outer surface of your gutters leads mold to grow and thrive thus blackening the whole surface and giving it a rather filthy look. Fortunately the grime and stains can be wiped off the gutter surface using specialized products such as paint thinner or a general purpose solvent.
When your gutters get clogged the rain or snow has nowhere to go but up on the roof or down the side of the house seeping into the interior walls and foundation causing damage. Bad gutters start sagging or pull away from the fascia board caused from too much snow weighing down the gutter. When the gutters are not protected with gutter guards they take a lot of wear and tear from trees animal feces snow ice and rain. When you have a solid guttering system the rain water and melted snow will run through the gutter in to the downspout out on the ground running away from your home. Without the gutter guard protection your gutters will eventually cause damage costing you thousands of dollars in repairs that could have been prevented.
