TENSION is a newsprint publication produced and containing photography by Boreal Collective.
Its interesting design and layout is meant to be pulled apart, spread out, scrutinized and, maybe, even stuck up on a wall.
When tasked with choosing a theme to curate this art promo, I thought about what word best described the kinds of images comprised in the Boreal Collective. To me, something that’s consistently present in their image making was their seriousness of subject examination. But what was their signature look? And what was it that defined these images collectively in my consciousness? The answer was that the images often had an underlying tension. And so that became the framework for this collection of images.
Tension is significant for me since it’s also a tool I employ to determine the merit of an image in an edit. How much tension is successfully conveyed in an image? That’s not just tension of subject, but also in framing. It’s the subject relationships and in the final combination of images. Pull your own edit, hang selections on a wall, and create your own version.
